Programmable thermostats made a huge impact on the HVAC industry when they were implemented into homes in the late 20th century. Today, you can find a programmable thermostat in many homes, yet a lot of homeowners are still unsure how to use them. We are committed to helping our customers save energy, which is why we have a few useful tips to help you out.
Don’t Lower the Temperature as Far as It Can Go
It’s a common misconception that setting the temperature to the lowest possible option will speed up the process. You should know, however, that the air conditioner can only cool at one speed. The system will only continue running for longer than is necessary, cycling until the temperature drops below what is comfortable and raising your bills. If you want to be sure that the AC is set to your preferences when you arrive home, use programming settings to arrange for the AC to kick in a half hour before you arrive.
Raise the Temperature for 8 Hours a Day
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, setting the thermostat 10 degrees higher for 8 hours a day (such as when you are away or sleeping) can save you 10% in cooling expenses. That’s quite a bit when you account for the fact that air conditioners are sometimes responsible for half of your energy price tag for the month.
Tip: Don’t know how to program your thermostat effectively? Read your manual! If you don’t know where it is, try looking up the model of your thermostat online.
Consider an Upgrade
Today, there are so many different options when it comes to thermostats. If you’re still stuck with a manual thermostat (that you have to readjust every time you want to change the temperature) the 10% savings is definitely worth the upgrade. You might also be interested in a smart thermostat or a modern programmable thermostat that has more options than your older model.
